Have you ever seen a real hell of a danger in your life coming towards you in slow motion? If an accident happens, it is mostly a matter of fraction of seconds. But what if you are about to witness those seconds stretched into time seem immemorial?

The cargo ships parked at the anchorage due to draft (depth of water) problem wait for the floating cranes to come alongside them. Subsequently these floating cranes are used to discharge the bulk cargo with the help of grabs (scoops) from the ship into small barges.

These cranes weigh around 60 tonnes with grabs each of 15 tonne hovering over the ship to scoop up the dry bulk cargo.

Vessel name : Sea of Harvest.
Vessel type : Bulk Carrier.
Gross Tonnage : 42,751 MT
Built year : 2010.
Captain on the Voyage : Hang Lee Quiam (Chinese).
Crew : 22.

Wheel House (जहां से शिप चलती है)

Windspeed is measured by anemometer on a Beaufort scale of 0 to 12.
0: Calm-Smoke goes straight up@1mph
4: Moderate breeze@18mph-Small branches move
6: Strong breeze@31mph-Large branches move; wires whistle
12: Hurricane@73mph & plus-Widespread destruction

It was 3:15 AM. The strong wind was now rising to a scale-6 i.e. winds as in tempest. The buffering tyres of both gigantic conveyances were brushing each other creating horribly loud squeaking noise. Suddenly, the anti-corrosive polypropylene rope of 4 inch diameter which was connecting the floating crane alongside ship just snapped by the force of the wind and opposite pressure of both giant conveyances, like a stretched chewing gum is broken by a kid with both hands.

The floating structure, like a newly divorced partner, went away from the ship for 50 feet roughly. But to our horror, the structure started to return back to ship as if a sudden emotional surge for its beloved partner may have become a reason for its thoughtful comeback. At that time my mind was closed to think anything, but afterwards I recalled the last scene from Hollywood movie `Speed’ where the Metro coach comes out on the road bursting out from a subway station, and comes to a screeching halt just millimeter away from an SUV.

The whole scene was like a tableau in a climax of a Broadway play. All frozen and stupefied. 10 feet. 5 feet. 1 feet. With a deafening bang, the structure finally hit the brand new 42000 metric tonne massive vessel.

With the deafening thud, the floating platform hit the ship and created a dent in the belly of the vessel peeling off the new paint in surrounding area where it hit. But miraculously amazing truth was that we all were ALIVE. The floating structure was fortunate to maintain its stability and only swerved for few seemingly long seconds (ah, those fate-deciding seconds…). It took so much time to sink in the fact for us that we have just survived from a mid-sea mishap.

In broad daylight, inspection of damage was made. Both the conveyances were insured so matter sorted out soon between agent and the Master of the Vessel.

Soon after, the barges waiting in distance since few hours, came flocking alongside the floating structure like hungry seals to be catered with coal as their food!

We bade adieu to the Sea of Harvest receding on the horizons, thanking the Supreme Power and all the unseen cosmic forces which saved us that night. Amen.

Quite a story of good and bad luck. In the end, all's well that ends well.

Truly said sir. It was matter of luck only.

A really scarry event written in Bollywood script style. Thankfully everything ended well.

Yes you are right. I have tried to write in the screenplay style.
