Steps towards preparations

We all know the meaning of personality development. but rarely do we understand the concept.

We assume wearing good clothes or expensive shoes or watches is indicative of a good personality.

But that’s not true.

In this guidance note, we will discuss what personality development for civil services means? In one word it means Gaining Knowledge.

Not just from textbooks and material relating to preparations for CSE but from widening your reading from several sources collectively known as Knowledge Base

Then what's the meaning of the word Knowledge Base?

Knowledge Base means adding Knowledge in your mind, heart, and soul EXPONENTIALLY.

And here's the game plan to do just that.

How to widen Knowledge Base

Simple by expansion of Knowledge Base for Civil Services

The earlier You begin wider the Base.

It’s like the Take Off stage in the Economy.

Begin by reading one newspaper thoroughly daily

Indian Express or the Hindu. They are ideal for CSE preparations.

Indian Express. Read the Front page and the editorial page Opinion page The World Page The Economy page The Explained page and the Sports page.

Similar to the Hindu Front page, editorial page Opinion page T & C page world page Business page Sports page

Magazines like Yojana Kurukshetra India Today etc for checking out govt schemes and developments

Read all govt schemes from social angles – how they impact the individuals and the society.

Widen your base by reading classical authors like Shakespeare, Dickens Hardy, and others.

Read up on Discovery of India, God of Small Things, Who Moved My Cheese, Animal Farms, The Wonder that was India, Ruskin Bond, etc.

The list is illustrative. Read as many and as widely as possible

Get to know philosophers like Rousseau Hobbes Locke Bentham, Mill, Kant, Hegel, Vivekananda, etc

Pick up modern Indian authors and read their works including thinkers and reformers.

You should read modern authors like Grisham Sheldon Ludlum etc. as well

For International relations post WWII read about Yalta Conference Potsdam Conference, San Francisco conference

World leaders like Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Attlee, Sukarno, Kennedy, Khrushchev, Tito, Nasser, Nkrumah, Nehru

Indian foreign policy is known as NAM.

UNO and its organs and agencies

Read about the Indian Freedom movement and leaders like Gandhi Bose, Tilak, Lajpat Rai, Azad, Rani ki Jhansi, Patel Nehru Sarojini Naidu, Ambedkar, Naroji, BP Pal, Aruna Asif Ali, Shastri and so on.

The list is illustrative

Read about their role and their contribution.

Read about various acts enacted by the British their policies and their impact

Gandhi’s contribution to freedom movement

And other important related issues.

If possible discuss the current issues with a friend or a mentor or a Buddy or another aspirant like you.

Start writing one précis of the first editorial every Friday.

1 improves your comprehension

2 increases your vocabulary

3 trains you to write in your own words

4 train you to write succinctly.

Write one essay from the previous year’s CSE papers twice every month.

Benefits of writing Essay

1] it increases your ability to think and write

2] Trains you for answering long questions in Mains

3] Increases your ability to write fluently on many topics and issues

Get both of them evaluated by a teacher or a mentor.

Start building up your body for strength both mental and physical, and stamina.

Exercise for one hour daily by Yoga, running or jogging or in the Gym.

Combine physical exercises with daily Pranayam or Meditation.

Start conversing in English as much as you can ( if your chosen language is English]

Grooming self for the job - smart turnout, always smiling, and ethical behavior.

Give up the use of tobacco completely.

Moderate your intake of alcohol gradually in case you consume alcohol.

Decrease your social media presence/exposure substantially.

Feel happy and look forward to being a civil servant but don’t become haughty or arrogant.

Be humble at all times.

NCERT READING –When to start – Your choice.

I don’t recommend reading NCERT books from the start of preparations. I recommend reading them two years before the date of the prelims of the target year.

But it's your call.

Start reading NCERT books from the 6th onwards to revive your school learning. Read them as per the guidance in the link is provided below.

It should begin say two years before the month/ year of the exam.
